Seated Priest
1754
Japan, Edo period
Lacquered wood, with copper (on chair)
“Carved with realism and psychological insight, this portrait shows a person of great dignity. The elaborate inscription of the underside of the chair indicates the importance of the sitter and the artist.
Donated to the founder and saint of this sect by the former chief priest of the Zo-o-So (temple), Sanenobu (donor) July, 4th year of Horeki (AD 1764). Made by Mondo Fukuoka, who is a sculptor of Buddhist images in Kyoto.
Although little is known of this sculptor, he is obviously a talented artist who received important commissions.”

Sorry for the blurriness. This was completely captivating in person.
